Why PTA Registration Is Required
PTA's Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS) requires every mobile phone used in Pakistan to be registered against your CNIC. Phones that remain unregistered after the grace period are blocked from all Pakistani mobile networks — calls, data, and SMS all stop working. Phones purchased from authorised local dealers are pre-registered at import by the importer. Phones brought from abroad must be registered within 30-60 days of first use with a Pakistani SIM.
Check If Your Phone Needs Registration
Dial *#06# on your phone — the 15-digit IMEI number appears on screen. Send this IMEI as an SMS message to 8484 from the SIM card in the phone. The reply arrives within 30-60 seconds and shows one of three statuses: Compliant (registered and approved for Pakistani networks), Non-Compliant (unregistered — will be blocked after the grace period), or Stolen (IMEI is on the blacklist — don't use this device).
Register at the DIRBS Portal
Go to dirbs.pta.gov.pk. Log in using your CNIC-based account (register a new account if this is your first time). Click Register Device. Enter your phone's IMEI number — for dual-SIM phones, enter both IMEIs. The system verifies whether the device is eligible for registration. If eligible, pay the applicable device registration tax. Registration is confirmed immediately after successful payment.
Baggage Concession Limits and Record-Keeping
Under the personal baggage concession, returning travellers can bring up to 5 phones per trip for personal use with reduced or zero device tax. One phone per traveller is typically fully exempt from registration tax for personal use. Additional phones beyond one are subject to device tax based on the phone's declared import value in USD. Keep the DIRBS registration confirmation for each device — it's essential if a device is ever blocked in error or needs to be reported stolen.
Device and SIM Problems
Contact the dealer with your purchase receipt. Authorised dealers pre-register devices at import, but errors can occur where a different IMEI was registered. If the error is confirmed, the dealer is responsible for resolving it. For genuine DIRBS errors, file a complaint at pta.gov.pk.
Wait 30 minutes and refresh the DIRBS portal. If still not confirmed after 1 hour, call the PTA consumer helpline at 0800-55055 with your payment confirmation number and IMEI.
